{"id":130,"date":"2021-01-10T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-10T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/poetry.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=130"},"modified":"2021-01-10T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-01-10T06:00:00","slug":"good-resolutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/good-resolutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Resolutions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><em>From the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85035720\/1913-01-10\/ed-2\/seq-18\/\"><em>Perth Amboy Evening News, January 10, 1913<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em>\n <em>By Walt Mason.<\/em>\n \n\n At 8 o\u2019clock on New Year\u2019s day,\n I heard Bill Wax, my neighbor, say:\n \u201cThis year will see me leave the hole\n In which I\u2019ve long immersed my soul;\n That hole is Debt, and from its deeps\n I\u2019ll drag myself, this time for keeps.\n My bank account must be enlarged;\n I\u2019ll buy no goods and have them charged;\n Collectors won\u2019t be on my track,\n Nor bailiffs camped around my shack.\n I\u2019ll cut out porterhouse and pie,\n And pay for everything I buy,\n And when the year is growing gray\n I\u2019ll have a bundle put away.\n This vow I surely won\u2019t forget\u2014\n I\u2019m bound to take a fall from Debt!\u201d\n For many years on New Year\u2019s day\n Old William Wax has talked this way;\n He\u2019s asked the gods to witness vows\n As rigid as the law allows,\n And for two weeks or maybe three\n Old Bill\u2019s as righteous as can be.\n And then he sees a watch or gun\n He needs so bad! He has no mon,\n And so he has the blame thing chalked;\n And then, such weary roads he\u2019s walked,\n He buys a horse to rest his frame,\n And gives his note\u2014the same old game;\n And when the year is growing old\n The merchants clamor for their gold,\n And Bill\u2019s afraid to go out doors\n To be run down by creditors.\n Alas for Bill!
