Budd.<\/em>\n \n\n Old Biddy Minorca was out on the fallow,\n \u00a0 Briskly digging out worms for her downy young brood,\n Working now on the hillside and now in the hollow,\n \u00a0 (She found no small task to provide them with food.)\n When suddenly, out of the somewhere-or-other,\n \u00a0 A flash and a wide-sweeping circle of wings;\n \u2019Twas a great hungry hawk, and the chicks flew to mother\n \u00a0 With the cry of alarm such a happening brings.\n \n With great self-possession she called them to shelter,\n \u00a0 Just settling herself, with a cluck, on the ground,\n While her babies ducked under her, helter-te-skelter,\n \u00a0 And when the hawk swooped not a chick could be found.\n Then old Biddy turned on him, the principal factors\n \u00a0 Of her lightning maneuvers, her fierce beak and claw,\n And, when you consider the size of the actors,\n \u00a0 \u2019Twas as handsome a battle as ever you saw.\n \n And the hen came off best\u2014oh, but say! how they praised her\n \u00a0 And called her a \u201cjewel\u201d and all the nice things!\n I am sure their attentions must quiet have amazed her\n \u00a0 As she hovered her brood \u2018neath her motherly wings.\n Then, seeing no more of the dreaded sky-ranger,\n \u00a0 She led them away, clucking softly and low\n To assure them that she would protect them from danger\n \u00a0 At the risk of her life, let who might be the foe.\n \n But here\u2019s Mrs. McBlankton who wishes the ballot\n \u00a0 And modestly asks for it\u2014yes, suffragette\u2014\n Not the kind that resort to the hammer or mallet,\n \u00a0 But she has boys and girls and the district is \u201cwet\u201d\n Or from other conditions she seeks to defend them,\n \u00a0 Yet you call her unwomanly, wanting a voice\n In her country\u2019s laws, either to make or amend them,\n \u00a0 And you claim that the men have the sole right of choice.\n \n Now, why should a hen be considered a jewel\n \u00a0 For protecting her children so nobly and well,\n And a woman unwomanly (ah! that sounds cruel!)\n \u00a0 For the very same reason?
