Stedman.<\/em>\n \n\n Where are the good things promised me\n &nbsp; &nbsp; By the Old Year that\u2019s dying?\n And what care I how ill he be\n &nbsp; &nbsp; Who was so given to lying?\n A comely youth, he sought my door\n And tarried till his locks were hoar;\n A fair and foul, capricious guest\n Who swore to give me of his best;\n &nbsp; &nbsp; Who pledged himself a true year;\n &nbsp; &nbsp; But he was then\u2014the New Year.\n \n Where are the silver and the gold\n &nbsp; &nbsp; Ere now should fill my wallet?\n What mean these scanty clothes and old,\n &nbsp; &nbsp; This attic room and pallet?\n The purse he dangled in my view\n Betwixt his juggling hands slipped through.\n He found me poor, he left me poorer,\n But now a richer friend, and surer,\n &nbsp; &nbsp; Awaits me\u2014in the New Year.\n \n Where are the poet\u2019s bays he said\n &nbsp; &nbsp; My dulcet song should gain me?\n The wreath that was to crown my head\n &nbsp; &nbsp; The applause that should sustain me?\n Alack!
