{"id":604,"date":"2021-02-16T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/poetry.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=604"},"modified":"2021-02-16T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T06:00:00","slug":"abou-ben-adhem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/abou-ben-adhem\/","title":{"rendered":"Abou ben Adhem"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><em>From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038485\/1913-02-16\/ed-1\/seq-29\/\"><em>The Birmingham Age-Herald, February 16, 1913<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em>\n <em>By Leigh Hunt.<\/em>\n \n\n Abou ben Adhem\u2014may his tribe increase!\n Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace\n And saw within the moonlight in his room\n Making it rich and like a lily in bloom\n An angel writing in a book of gold\n Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold\n And to the presence in the room he said,\n \u201cWhat writest thou?\u201d The vision raised its head\n And, with a look made of all sweet accord\n Answered, \u201cThe names of those who love the Lord.\u201d\n \u201cAnd is my name one?\u201d Said Abou. \u201cNay, not so,\u201d\n Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low\n But cheerily still, and said, \u201cI pray thee, then,\n Write me as one that loves his fellow men.\u201d\n \n\n The angel wrote and vanished.
