{"id":6851,"date":"2021-03-25T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-25T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/poetry.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=714"},"modified":"2021-03-25T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-25T05:00:00","slug":"the-old-home-folks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-old-home-folks\/","title":{"rendered":"The Old Home Folks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><em>From the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn99021999\/1913-03-25\/ed-1\/seq-8\/\"><em>Omaha Daily Bee, March 25, 1913<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em>\n <em>By Will Chamberlain.<\/em>\n \n\n Not on the chance acquaintance,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Nor yet on the new found friend,\n When the storms about us gather\n \u00a0 \u00a0 For comfort may we depend.\n \n If I should be permitted,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Aside from all light jokes,\n To choose for you the truest,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 I would pick the old home folks.\n \n From them I would name a husband\n \u00a0 \u00a0 For the dimpled, would-be bride;\n A childhood mate or sweetheart,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 In whom she might confide.\n \n The old home folks are surest\n \u00a0 \u00a0 To notice if we succeed,\n And they are the first to sorrow\n \u00a0 \u00a0 With us when our hearts do bleed.\n \n So do not be quick in forsaking\n \u00a0 \u00a0 The faithfully tried for the new,\n Who may seem so apt and clever\n \u00a0 \u00a0 When the skies are soft and blue.\n \n For tho\u2019 it is said the prophet\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Has honor except at home,\n Love blossoms there for the masses\u2014\n \u00a0 \u00a0 The prophet afar may roam.\n\n And when in the fading twilight\n \u00a0 \u00a0 We put off life\u2019s stern jokes,\n Those who will stand to us closest\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Will be the old home folks.\n \n While away on their sunny hilltops,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 By Elysian breezes fanned,\n God\u2019s own home folks will greet us\n \u00a0 \u00a0 With a smile and outstretched hand.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, March 25, 1913.
