A guardsman said,\n \u201cWe storm the forts tomorrow;\n Sing while we may, another day\n Will bring enough of sorrow.\u201d\n \n They lay along the battery\u2019s side,\n Below the smoking cannon;\n Brave hearts, from Severn and from Clyde,\n And from the banks of Shannon.\n \n They sang of love and not of fame;\n Forgot was Britain\u2019s glory;\n Each heart recalled a different name,\n But all sang \u201cAnnie Laurie.\u201d\n \n Voice after voice caught up the song,\n Until its tender passion\n Rose like an anthem, rich and strong\u2014\n Their battle-eve confession.\n \n Dear girl, her name he dared not speak,\n But as the song grew louder,\n Something upon the soldier\u2019s cheek\n Washed off the stains of powder.\n \n Beyond the darkening ocean burned\n The bloody sunset\u2019s embers,\n While the Crimean valleys learned\n How English love remembers.\n \n And once again a fire of hell\n Rained on the Russian quarters,\n With scream of shot, and burst of shell,\n And bellowing of the mortars!\n \n And Irish Nora\u2019s eyes are dim\n For a singer dumb and gory;\n And English Mary mourns for him\n Who sang of \u201cAnnie Laurie.\u201d\n \n Sleep soldiers!
