And oh, how he does pine\n For the \u201csweet old-fashioned woman,\u201d and extol the \u201cclinging vine!\u201d\n And when, each night, he meets \u201cthe boys,\u201d where golden beakers foam\n He cries in tones dramatic, \u201cWoman\u2019s place is in the home!\u201d\n \n I know a lot of lovely maids, oh quite a score or more\n And each would make a charming wife for this same bachelor.\n But the \u201chorrid things\u201d insist on trotting downtown every day\n And slaving in an office\u2014just to keep the wolf away.\n They should be darning someone\u2019s socks or knitting baby-shoes.\n Their place is \u201cin the home,\u201d of course\u2014somebody\u2019s home\u2014but whose?\n \n I know a girl of scarce sixteen, who rouses me to scorn\n She never stays at home at all, but trudges off each morn\n And pounds a little type-machine\u2014oh, \u201cjust to pass the time\u201d\u2014\n And help her mother pay the rent. Such folly is sublime!\n Some one should really tell her to her pretty little face\n That girls were made for \u201cornaments.\u201d The home is woman\u2019s place!\n \n I live, myself, within a big luxurious hotel;\n And, when I want my dusting done, I simply ring a bell.\n I never do a single thing, but scribble all day long.\n I know, alas, this \u201cidle\u201d life is very, very wrong.\n I should be doing fancy work, or polishing my nails.\n But how I\u2019d pay my bills that way\u2014Well, there my fancy fails!\n \n What are the women coming to\u2014to go at such a pace!\n The \u201csweet old-fashioned girl\u201d sat \u2018round and just massaged her face,\n Worked cushion-tops, and curled her hair, and gossiped by the hour;\n But lo, the modern woman goes at sixty-five horse-power!\n Ah, well, I trust that some of them will read this little \u201cpome,\u201d\n And realize, at last, that \u201cWoman\u2019s place is in the home!\u201d\n \n Then Katy will not come back each day to put away my clothes,\n And who will write my quips for me\u2014well, Heaven only knows!\n The typist and the laundry-maid, the waitress and the clerk\n Will stay at home, like ladies then, and do \u201ca woman\u2019s work.\u201d\n And all the men will gather where the golden beakers foam\u2014\n And wonder who on earth will do the work outside the home?<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> I know a little bachelor, with lots and lots of pelf<br \/>\n And all the pennies that he gets he spends upon himself;<br \/>\n But oh, how he can moralize!
