From <\/em>The Seattle Star, July 4, 1913<\/em><\/a>.<\/em>\n By Berton Braley.<\/em>\n \n\n Here, in the rays of the blazing sun\n \u00a0 \u00a0 And the heat of the summer weather,\n The Cause that Lost and the Cause that Won\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Met on the field together;\n And the Boys in Gray and the Boys in Blue\n Fought for the cause they thought was true\n \u00a0 \u00a0 In the battle\u2019s smoke and smother,\n And the blood ran red and the fields grew black\n And the dead lay still in the cannon\u2019s track,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 As brother fought with brother.\n \n There were deeds of daring on either side\n \u00a0 \u00a0 \u2018Mid the big guns\u2019 crash and thunder,\n Which thrill the heart with a mighty pride\n \u00a0 \u00a0 And the brain with a sense of wonder,\n To think of the gallant lads and gay\n Who fought for the blue or the somber gray\n \u00a0 \u00a0 With a bravery fine and splendid\u2014\n And then we shudder to think, in truth,\n Of the thousands slain in the flower of youth\n \u00a0 \u00a0 When the long hot day was ended.\n \n The battle was won and the price was paid\n \u00a0 \u00a0 In agony, blood and treasure,\n And wife and mother and sorrowing maid\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Knew pain that we may not measure,\n For thus we learned at a fearful cost\n That the brave Lost Cause was better lost,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Though gallant in song and story,\n Lost, that the Union might not die\n But South and North alike might fly\n \u00a0 \u00a0 The Flag that we call Old Glory!\n \n Here in the rays of the blazing sun\n \u00a0 \u00a0 And the heat of the summer weather,\n Was fought the battle that made us One,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 A people close-bound together!\n God grant that never again may we\n Know such a struggle to keep us free,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 With all of our hearts we pray it,\n But if the summons should come again\n To pay the price as we paid it then,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 God grant us the strength to pay it!<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
