{"id":7261,"date":"2021-07-09T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-09T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=7261"},"modified":"2021-07-09T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-07-09T05:00:00","slug":"spinning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/spinning\/","title":{"rendered":"Spinning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><em>From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038485\/1913-07-09\/ed-1\/seq-4\/\"><em>The Birmingham Age Herald, July 9, 1913<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em>\n <em>By Helen Hunt Jackson.<\/em>\n \n\n Like a blind spinner in the sun,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 I tread my days;\n I know that all the threads will run\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Appointed ways;\n I know each day will bring its task,\n And, being blind, no more I ask.\n \n I do not know the name or use\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Of that I spin;\n I only know that some one came\n \u00a0 \u00a0 And laid within\n My hand the thread, and said, \u201cSince you\n Are blind, but one thing you can do.\u201d\n \n Sometimes the threads so rough and fast\n \u00a0 \u00a0 And tangled fly.\n I know wild storms are sweeping past,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 And fear that I\n Shall fail; but dare not try to find\n A safer place, since I am blind.\n \n I know not why, but I am sure\n \u00a0 \u00a0 That tint and place\n In some great fabric to endure\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Past time and race\n My threads will have; so from the first,\n Though blind, I never felt accursed.\n \n I think, perhaps, this trust has sprung\n \u00a0 \u00a0 From one short word\n Said over me when I was young\u2014\n \u00a0 \u00a0 So young, I heard\n It; knowing not that God\u2019s name signed\n My brow, and sealed me his, though blind.\n \n But whether this be seal or sign\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Within, without,\n It matters not.
