 By a \u201cChristian People\u201d hated,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 By these \u201cChristians\u201d robbed, outraged.\n We are outcasts in the nation\u2014\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Weeping, praying, not enraged.\n \n Christless \u201cChristians,\u201d O the pity!\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Men who glory in their might,\n Strong to crush the weaker peoples,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Blind to every sense of right.\n \n With their lips this nation honors\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Christ as teacher, Savior, Lord;\n What a mockery in splendor\n \u00a0 \u00a0 While their deeds with hell accord.\n \n Have the shepherds all forgotten,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cVengeance to our God belongs?\u201d\n Did he not requite this people\n \u00a0 \u00a0 For past centuries of wrongs?\n \n O ye statesmen, save your people;\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Stay the madness of their hate,\n Lest the God of vengeance, rising,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Bring them to a direr fate.\n \n Let the other nations teach you.\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Spain has lost a Western world;\n Where her standard proudly floated,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Not a flag is now unfurled.\n \n England, too, unjust and cruel,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Lost what now you boast with pride,\n And your ships of war, majestic,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Every sea and ocean ride.\n \n Are you stronger than the Romans\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Who made all the world their own?\n Where are now the mighty Caesars?\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Pomp, and power, and lands are gone.\n \n Yes, the pride of ancient nations\n \u00a0 \u00a0 One by one has passed away.\n O ye statesmen, patriots, hear me:\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Stay our country\u2019s final day.\n \n Laugh? They laughed and scorned the prophets\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Who foretold the Pharaohs\u2019 fall,\n Proud Philistia\u2019s kings derided,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Hebrew monarchs, Assyrians, all.\n \n But their kingdoms, empires perished;\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Ancient ruins mark their states.\n God of nations, rise, defend us\n \u00a0 \u00a0 From this people\u2019s galling hate.\n \n Guard our names from grossest slanders,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Forged by men who hate the race;\n All the wrongs we bear, remember,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Lighten every heart and face.\n \n Then though men and living demons\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Burn, and kill, and rob, and lie,\n We will brook our lot and conquer,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Filled with power from on high.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
