Got a card from Steve this mornin\u2019, doggone his trav\u2019lin\u2019 skin
He\u2019s up around Niag\u2019ry Falls a-writin\u2019 home agin.
Seems like that boy\u2019s one glory is to wander full an\u2019 free
An\u2019 furder off he gits, I gosh, th\u2019 more he writes to me.
He sends these picture postal cards, with photos showin\u2019 that
The world is allus beautif\u2019lest where you ain\u2019t livin\u2019 at.
His messages reads all the same, in letters large an\u2019 clear
He writes from Maine er Kankakee an\u2019 says\u2014
    \u201cWish you was here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody ever seems to know just when he\u2019ll go er where.
We git his destination from the card that says he\u2019s there.
An\u2019 he ain\u2019t more than settled down to loaf a day er two
Till he gits thinkin\u2019 up the names of ever\u2019one he knew.
An\u2019 then with ever\u2019 doggone cent he possibly kin spare
He buys the Unitary church, the Depot an\u2019 the Square.
He buys \u2018bout ever\u2019thing they is in Bath er Belvidere,
Then mails the whole blame business home an\u2019 says\u2014
    \u201cWish you was here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I guess he\u2019s at Niag\u2019ry now; he was last time he wrote,
But that don\u2019t prove conclusively he ain\u2019t in Terry Hote.
He may be down in Panama er snoopin\u2019 round in Nome.
Nobody knows just where he\u2019s at\u2014except he ain\u2019t at home!
I guess we\u2019d never hear from him fer months er mebbe years
If some kind soul had not devised these picture souvenirs.
Yes, I expect if Steve would die he\u2019d rise up from his bier
To pen a card to all his friends an\u2019 say\u2014
