{"id":7360,"date":"2021-08-04T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=7360"},"modified":"2021-08-04T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T05:00:00","slug":"a-ballad-of-economics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/a-ballad-of-economics\/","title":{"rendered":"A Ballad of Economics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83016689\/1913-08-04\/ed-1\/seq-10\/\"><em>The Detroit Times, August 4, 1913<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re striving hard to live within our means;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; We\u2019ve left behind our proper habitat<br>And huddled like traditional sardines<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; We occupy a microscopic flat.<br>But though I quote domestic science pat,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And seek the cheapest market-house in town,<br>And wear a thrice-remodeled coat and hat,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; I cannot keep the cost of living down!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My busy hand unceasing cooks and cleans<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; (I boast to friends that work reduces fat)<br>We\u2019ve discontinued all the magazines<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; My eldest son has given up his \u2018frat\u2019.<br>My husband lunches at the Automat<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; My daughter wears a subway-bargain gown<br>We\u2019ve sold the dog and chloroformed the cat\u2014<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; I cannot keep the cost of living down!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alas, my dear ones will not stand for beans,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; For mush-and-milk, and frugal cheer like that!<br>They yearn for cates that grace more affluent scenes<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And ill become the proletariat.<br>The Simple Life is marred by many a spat<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; For on my pet economies they frown;<br>They call me stingy and an autocrat\u2014<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; I cannot keep the cost of living down!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Detroit Times, August 4, 1913.
