{"id":7364,"date":"2021-08-06T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-06T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=7364"},"modified":"2021-08-06T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T05:00:00","slug":"the-germ-covered-bucket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-germ-covered-bucket\/","title":{"rendered":"The Germ Covered Bucket"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn99021999\/1913-08-06\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\"><em>Omaha Daily Bee, August 6, 1913<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How they sadden this heart, the scenes of my childhood,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; When dread recollection presents them to view\u2014<br>Malarious meadows and dangerous wildwood,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; The place where the mushrooms, so poisonous grew;<br>The pond was a cesspool; the stable stood by it,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Draining into the stream where the cataract fell;<br>The poultry yard sat with the dairy house nigh it;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And that terrible bucket that hung in the well!<br>The fungus-grown bucket, the germ-laden bucket,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; The moss-covered bucket that hung in the well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poor dad was addicted to quinine and bitters,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Poor mother was shaken with fever and chill\u2014<br>And we buried \u2018em both, the innocent critters,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; In the populous graveyard that bloomed on the hill\u2014<br>The graveyard that gobbled the whole generation,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; That drained toward the house when the summer rain fell\u2014<br>Sometimes I dream of my father\u2019s plantation<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And wake with a scream when I think of that well!<br>And that terrible bucket, that death-dealing bucket,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; That germ-covered bucket that hung in the well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, August 6, 1913.
