{"id":7447,"date":"2021-08-24T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=7447"},"modified":"2021-08-24T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T05:00:00","slug":"a-busy-little-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/a-busy-little-man\/","title":{"rendered":"A Busy Little Man"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038485\/1913-08-24\/ed-1\/seq-40\/\"><em>The Birmingham Age Herald, August 24, 1913<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again he comes, on eager feet,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; His wagon at his heels;<br>He pauses at my window seat<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And for my trade appeals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat will you have?\u201d I hear him ask<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; In brisk, storekeeper voice;<br>And I must lay aside my task<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And gravely make my choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he, as I each package name,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; As gravely hands it out;<br>Then, with my note in pay for same,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; He hurries on his route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For cash, it seems, he little cares\u2014<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; He knows my word is good;<br>And so I question not his wares<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; As good housekeepers should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I fear the coffee that I buy<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Is pebbles, picked with care;<br>I dare not in the sugar pry<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; For only sand is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My beefsteak is a sorry show\u2014<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; I think it must be bone;<br>And for a loaf of bread I know<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; He\u2019s wrapped me up a stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But bless his heart!
