By Eugene Field.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you ever hear the wind go \u201cYooooo?\u201d<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; \u2019Tis a pitiful sound to hear!<br>It seems to thrill you through and through<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; With a strange and speechless fear.<br>\u2019Tis the voice of the night that broods outside<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; When folk should be asleep,<br>And many and many\u2019s the time I\u2019ve cried<br>To the darkness brooding far and wide<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Over the land and the deep;<br>\u201cWhom do you want, O lonely night<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; That you wail the long hours through?\u201d<br>And the night would say in its ghostly way:<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Yoooooo!<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Yoooooo!<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Yoooooo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My mother told me long ago (when I was a little lad)<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 That when the night went wailing so,<br>Somebody had been bad;<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And then, when I was snug in bed,<br>Whither I had been sent,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 With the blankets pulled up round my head<br>I\u2019d think of what my mother said<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And wonder what boy she meant!<br>And \u201cWho\u2019s been bad today?\u201d I\u2019d ask<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 Of the wind that hoarsely blew,<br>And the voice would say in a meaningful way:<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 Yoooooo!<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Yoooooo!<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Yoooooo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That this was true I must allow,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; You\u2019ll not believe it, though!<br>Yes, though I\u2019m quite a model now<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; I was not always so,<br>And if you doubt what things I say,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Suppose you make the test;<br>Suppose, when you\u2019ve been bad some day<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And up to bed are sent away from mother and the rest\u2014<br>Suppose you ask, \u201cWho has been bad?\u201d<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And then you\u2019ll hear what\u2019s true:<br>For the wind will moan in its ruefullest tone:<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Yoooooo!<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Yoooooo!<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Yoooooo!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, September 10, 1913.
