By Witter Bynner.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An appreciation and character sketch of Lincoln, unusual and unique in form, but nonetheless forceful, is in the current issue of Harper&#8217;s Weekly. It comes from the pen of Witter Bynner, and is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lincoln?\u2014<br>Well, I was in the old Second Maine,<br>The first regiment in Washington from the Pine Tree State.<br>Of course I didn\u2019t get the butt of the clip;<br>We was there guardin\u2019 Washington\u2014<br>We was all green.<br>I ain\u2019t never been to but one theater in my life\u2014<br>I didn\u2019t know how to behave;<br>I ain\u2019t never been since.<br>I can see as plain as my hat the box where he sat in<br>When he was shot.<br>There was quite a panic<br>When we found our President was in the shape he was in;<br>Never saw a soldier in the world but what liked him.<br>Yes, sir. His looks was kind o\u2019 hard to forget.\u2014<br>He was a spare man,<br>An old farmer.<br>Everything was all right, you know,<br>But he wan\u2019t a smooth-appearin\u2019 man at all,\u2014<br>Not in no ways;<br>Thin-faced, long-necked,<br>And a swellin\u2019 kind of a thick lip like,\u2014<br>A neighborin\u2019 farmer.<br>And he was a jolly old fellow, always cheerful;<br>He wan\u2019t so high but the boys could talk to him their own ways.<br>While I was servin\u2019 at the Hospital<br>He\u2019d come in and say, \u201cYou look nice in here,\u201d\u2014<br>Praise us up, you know.<br>And he\u2019d bend over and talk to the boys\u2014<br>And he\u2019d talk so good to \u2018em\u2014so close\u2014<br>That\u2019s why I call him a farmer.<br>I don\u2019t mean that everything about him wan\u2019t all right, you understand.<br>It\u2019s jes\u2019\u2014well, I was a farmer\u2014<br>And he was jes\u2019 everybody\u2019s neighbor.\u2014<br>I guess even you young folks would \u2019a\u2019 liked him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Topeka State Journal, February 12, 1914.
