By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had a suffrage meetin\u2019 down to Pohick on the Crick.<br>The voters and the voteresses came resolved to kick.<br>At the sound of \u201cVotes for women!\u201d all the men folk said \u201cHurrah!\u201d<br>But a number of the women simply smiled and said, \u201cOh, pshaw!\u201d<br>We talked the matter over. The elections of the past<br>Had often failed, all owin\u2019 to the way the votes were cast.<br>We declared that if they wished it, we\u2019d stay home an\u2019 mend the socks<br>An\u2019 let our wives show how to run that pesky ballot box.<br>We promised to remove ourselves completely from the scene<br>When an election day came \u2019round; we\u2019d make it all serene<br>By lettin\u2019 none but woman, lovely woman, stand in line,<br>To show the world some ballotin\u2019 all up-to-date an\u2019 fine.<br>Then Huldah Higgins said, \u201cThat\u2019s jes\u2019 the way them men will shirk!<br>They want to stand around an\u2019 let us women do the work!\u201d<br>She roused such indignation that the case was settled quick.<br>The men will keep on votin\u2019 down to Pohick on the Crick.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, February 15, 1914.
