By Thomas Lomax Hunter.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My friend, because you didn\u2019t get<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; The public office that you sought,<br>Don\u2019t holler fraud. Don\u2019t squeal and fret.<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Don\u2019t shout aloud that votes were bought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smile and look pleasant. That\u2019s the plan.<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Don\u2019t talk about the \u201ccampaign lie.\u201d<br>Say, \u201cWhat most helped that Other Man<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Was that he got more votes than I.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are gracious and discreet,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And never whimper or complain,<br>You will make profit of defeat,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And get there when you run again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The squealer never can come back,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Because, you see, the few votes more<br>That he was plainly shown to lack,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; He cannot win by getting sore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what the game you play,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; No matter what the race you run,<br>The loser should be brave and gay.<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; This spirit gives the game its fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot always win, but you<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Howe\u2019er the wheel of fortune spins,<br>Can give your vanquisher his due<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And cry, \u201cHurrah! The best man wins!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In him the people most delight<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; (Next to the hero with his fame),<br>Who, having fought his utmost fight<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Now takes his beating gay and game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instinctively, we feel that he<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Whose courage \u2018neath no beating fell,<br>Will some day win the victory,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And wear it modestly and well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then just because the battle\u2019s lost<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Don\u2019t lose your self-control also.<br>To conquer self at any cost<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Takes half the victory from the foe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shall people say when you pass by,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cThere goes that sorehead bawler out,\u201d<br>Or slap you on the back and cry,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cI hope you\u2019ll win next time, old scout?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Times Dispatch, March 26, 1914.
