By Thomas Lomax Hunter.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each night I bravely wind it up<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And set it by my head,<br>Then say my \u201cNow I lay me down\u201d<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And snugly go to bed.<br>And in the watches of the night<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 I think of it with dread.<br>So grim and wakeful sitting there<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 With minatory ticks,<br>To sound its dreadful reveille<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 At quarter after six.<br>I wake up wondering what\u2019s the time,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And strike a match to see,<br>It looks me coldly in the face<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And answers half past three.<br>I hear the patter of the hail<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 Against the window pane,<br>Then turn me in my downy couch<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And seek for sleep again.<br>I think about the bitter cold<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And try to sleep in vain,<br>And like a felon in his cell,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 Condemned and all forlorn,<br>I feel it is a death watch set<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 To sound my doom at morn.<br>When, after tossing to and fro,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And tribulations long,<br>I fall into a fitful sleep,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 It sounds its baneful gong.<br>I boil indignant out of bed<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And choke the strident pest,<br>While passions primitive and fierce<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 Possess my angry breast.<br>Oh, how I\u2019d like to take a club<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And knock it galley-west.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Topeka State Journal, April 2, 1914.
