{"id":8110,"date":"2022-04-19T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-19T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8110"},"modified":"2022-04-19T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T05:00:00","slug":"johnny-sands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/johnny-sands\/","title":{"rendered":"Johnny Sands"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83030272\/1914-04-19\/ed-1\/seq-61\/\"><em>The Sun, April 19, 1914<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man whose name was Johnny Sands<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 Had married Betty Hague;<br>And though she brought him gold and lands,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 She proved a terrible plague\u2014<br>For, oh, she was a scolding wife,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 Full of caprice and whim\u2014<br>He said that he was tired of life,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And she was tired of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Says he, \u201cThen I will drown myself\u2014<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; The river runs below.\u201d<br>Says she, \u201cPray do, you silly elf\u2014<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; I wished it long ago.\u201d<br>Says he, \u201cUpon the brink I&#8217;ll stand.<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Do you run down the hill<br>And push me in with all your might.\u201d<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Says she, \u201cMy love, I will.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor fear that I should courage lack<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And try to save my life,<br>Pray tie my hands behind my back.\u201d<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cI will,\u201d replied his wife.<br>She tied them fast, as you may think,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And when securely done,<br>\u201cNow stand,\u201d she says, \u201cupon the brink,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; While I prepare to run.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All down the hill his loving bride<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Now ran with all her force<br>To push him in\u2014he stepped aside,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And she fell in of course.<br>Now splashing, dashing like a fish\u2014<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cOh save me, Johnny Sands!\u201d<br>\u201cI can&#8217;t, my dear, though much I wish,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; For you have tied my hands!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Sun, April 19, 1914.
