{"id":8127,"date":"2022-04-26T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8127"},"modified":"2022-04-26T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-04-26T05:00:00","slug":"the-old-fan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-old-fan\/","title":{"rendered":"The Old Fan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83045462\/1914-04-26\/ed-1\/seq-65\/\"><em>Evening Star, April 26, 1914<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He comes every day to see them play<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Where the noisy bleachers shout.<br>From the first of May in the thick of the fray<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; You find him day in and out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He once had wealth and he once had health,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; But they both went long ago;<br>He\u2019s lost his wealth and comes in stealth<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; To the game he used to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He works in the fall just enough to call<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Together a hundred or two,<br>That shall average all the days of ball<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And take him the summer through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He never is seen in the winter keen<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; From the day of final fly<br>\u2019Til spring is queen and the diamond\u2019s green<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And the crack of the bat is nigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then a little more pale and a little more frail<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; He creeps out to the ground,<br>And leans o\u2019er the rail when the flies they sail<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And studies the bushmen found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the first of May, at least so they say,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; He begins to get his voice,<br>And talk of the play in a running way<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And cackle about his choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His mind disturbed, he never is heard<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Until that first of May<br>To utter a word, then his heart is stirred<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And he shrieks at every play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So every spring we are wondering,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; \u2019Til we see him creeping out,<br>If death\u2019s dark wing has been hovering<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And fanned his life spark out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s shriveling thin, the spirit within<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Is all that keeps him about;<br>When the home nine wins his cheek bones\u2019 skin<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Shows a hectic flush without.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I often think that a breath will wink<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; That frail life spirit out<br>And break the link at death\u2019s near brink<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; If the home team\u2019s put to rout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So here\u2019s to the Fan, to the also ran,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; May he live on the bleachers here,<br>And stretch life\u2019s span and cheat death\u2019s ban<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; For still another year!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, April 26, 1914.
