By Henry Howland.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people say it wasn\u2019t luck that made \u2018em rich and proud;<br>They claim \u2019twas wisdom, work and pluck that raised \u2018em from the crowd.<br>I don\u2019t deny that there\u2019s a pile of truth in what they say,<br>And yit it always makes me smile to hear \u2018em talk that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fer instance, there was Henry Wood\u2014taught school here years ago;<br>His teachin\u2019 wasn\u2019t any good\u2014we had to tell him so;<br>He tried to get another school, but couldn\u2019t anywhere;<br>Directors thought he was a fool and said so plain and fair.<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; So havin\u2019 nothin\u2019 else to do, he wrote a silly book or two;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Most mushy stuff I ever read, but I have lately heard it said<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; That Henry was a millionaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there was John Tate\u2019s oldest son, a lazy, worthless chap;<br>When there was hard work to be done he never helped his pap;<br>The old man drove him off at last\u2014just told him plain and flat<br>That all the monkeyin\u2019 was past\u2014what happened after that?<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; They say he\u2019s saltin\u2019 money down and keeps six servants up in town;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; He sells some kind of medicine he guarantees to keep \u2018em thin<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; When women think they\u2019re gettin\u2019 fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take them two fellers\u2014was it pluck with which they were endowed?<br>Or was it just a bit of luck that made \u2018em rich and proud?<br>Take notice, that I don\u2019t deny that work and wisdom win,<br>But when you say that ends it, why\u2014excuse me if I grin.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, April 27, 1914.
