Sangster, Jr.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A crash, a flash, a momentary triumph,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 The blaze of the sun from out a sky of blue;<br>And someone lies, a heap of huddled garments,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 With heart now still that once sang brave and true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A blur of smoke against the mountains rugged,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 A buzzard winging slowly through the sky,<br>And miles away a little mother\u2014waiting\u2014<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And praying to the gracious God on high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A moan, a stream of life blood ebbing swiftly,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 A pair of eyes that close in endless sleep;<br>A bullet, sharp and sudden in its coming,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 That leaves a wound so horrible and deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A paper, printed large in glowing headlines,<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 That says, \u201cHe left a mother, next of kin.\u201d<br>A country\u2019s loud approval of a hero\u2014<br>\u00a0 \u00a0 And one small woman sobbing through the din!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fear, a tear, a pair of hands clasped tightly,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; A mind that sees a sturdy little boy,<br>A tiny baby face with roguish dimples,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; A sound of laughter filled with childish joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A nation\u2019s hero, dying first\u2014with glory!<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; A man in spirit, though a boy in years,<br>A soldier shot in battle, fighting bravely\u2014<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; A little mother smiling through the tears!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, May 1, 1914.
