{"id":8152,"date":"2022-05-02T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-02T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8152"},"modified":"2022-05-02T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-02T05:00:00","slug":"the-girl-i-left-behind-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-girl-i-left-behind-me\/","title":{"rendered":"The Girl I Left Behind Me"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn89074404\/1914-05-02\/ed-1\/seq-5\/\"><em>Grand Forks Daily Herald, May 2, 1914<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dames of France are fond and free,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And Flemish lips are willing,<br>And soft the maids of Italy,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And Spanish eyes are thrilling;<br>Still though I bask beneath their smile,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Their charms all fail to bind me,<br>And my heart falls back to Erin\u2019s isle,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; To the girl I left behind me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For she\u2019s as fair as Shannon\u2019s side,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; And purer than its water,<br>But she refused to be my bride,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Though many a year I sought her;<br>Yet, since to France I sail\u2019d away,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; Her letters oft remind me,<br>That I promis\u2019d never to gainsay<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; The girl I left behind me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says, \u201cMy own dear love, come home,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; My friends are rich and many,<br>Or else abroad with you I\u2019ll roam,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; A soldier stout as any;<br>If you\u2019ll not come, nor let me go,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; I\u2019ll think you have resigned me.\u201d<br>My heart nigh broke when I answered, \u201cNo,\u201d<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; To the girl I left behind me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For never shall my true love brave<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; A life of war and toiling,<br>And never as a skulking slave<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; I\u2019ll tread my native soil on;<br>But were it free, or to be freed,<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; The battle\u2019s close would find me<br>To Ireland bound, nor message need<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; From the girl I left behind me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, May 2, 1914.
