{"id":8182,"date":"2022-05-17T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-17T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8182"},"modified":"2022-05-17T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-17T05:00:00","slug":"catclaw-and-cactus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/catclaw-and-cactus\/","title":{"rendered":"Catclaw and Cactus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83030272\/1914-05-17\/ed-1\/seq-10\/\"><em>The Sun, May 17, 1914<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catclaw and cactus are thick in the pasture, that sun blistered section of rocks and dry grass;<br>The fat little prairie dogs sit by their burrows and rasp out shrill warnings as we gallop past.<br>Up in the blue sky the buzzards are soaring; a startled jackrabbit, with fear in his breast,<br>Decamps like a streak through the brush scattered wildly\u2014the fauna and flora that mark the great West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hurrah for the feel of a battered stock saddle\u2014the slapping of brush against weather worn chaps;<br>The smell of a wet horse\u2014the sound of his hoofbeats\u2014the jingle of spurs and the creaking of straps!<br>Your cities seem nothing but dens of corruption, for here steady breezes blow sweet without rest.<br>Just give me a horse and some square miles of pasture, and leave me at peace far out here in the West.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Sun, May 17, 1914.
