By Samuel Woodworth.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>How dear to this heart are the scenes of my childhood,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When fond recollection presents them to view!<br\/>The orchard, the meadow, the deep-tangled wildwood,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And every loved spot which my infancy knew;<br\/>The wide spreading pond, and the mill which stood by it,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The bridge and the rock where the cataract fell;<br\/>The cot of my father, the dairy house nigh it,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The moss-covered bucket which hung in the well\u2014<br\/>The old oaken bucket, the iron-bound bucket,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That moss-covered bucket which hung in the well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>That moss-covered vessel I hail as a treasure;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For often at noon when returned from the field,<br\/>I found it the source of an exquisite pleasure,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The purest and sweetest that nature can yield.<br\/>How ardent I seized it, with hands that were glowing!<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And quick to the white pebbled bottom it fell;<br\/>Then soon with the emblem of truth overflowing,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And dripping with coolness, it rose from the well\u2014<br\/>The old oaken bucket, the iron-bound bucket,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The moss-covered bucket arose from the well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>How sweet from the green mossy brim to receive it,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As, poised on the curb, it inclined to my lips!<br\/>Not a full blushing goblet could tempt me to leave it,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Though filled with the nectar that Jupiter sips.<br\/>And now far removed from the loved situation,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The tears of regret will intrusively swell,<br\/>As fancy reverts to my father\u2019s plantation,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And sighs for the bucket that hangs in the well\u2014<br\/>The old oaken bucket, the iron-bound bucket,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The moss-covered bucket which hangs in the well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, June 17, 1914.
