By Hudson Maxim.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A whir of dust is sweeping the hill,<br\/>Between the gray dawn and the huge black mill.<br\/>There\u2019s a drift of rags and of skinny bones,<br\/>With skeleton feet on the ruthless stones.<br\/>What specters are these in the witching light\u2014<br\/>This ghostly rear-guard of the night,<br\/>Wearily treading the trail of the dark,<br\/>Arousing the morn before the lark?<br\/>What wights are they, so gaunt and lean,<br\/>With lagging pace and drowsy mien,<br\/>Who under the dim lamp\u2019s flickering glow<br\/>Wind into the cavernous mill below?<br\/>A sortie of ghouls aloose from the tomb,<br\/>Or a rabble of wraiths begot of the gloom?<br\/>No\u2014goblins and ghouls such task would shirk\u2014<br\/>It is only the children going to work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Detroit Times, June 18, 1914.
