By Henry Howland.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>No snow-capped mountains may be seen<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;From where I sit and work away;<br\/>No meadows that are wide and green<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Delight my soul from day to day;<br\/>I walk beneath no spreading trees<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nor sit beside a sparkling pool,<br\/>But there is a delightful breeze<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That serves to keep me calm and cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>All day I hear the city\u2019s roar,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The room I occupy is small,<br\/>And when I let my fancy soar<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It bumps against a lofty wall;<br\/>Instead of scents of new-mown hay,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I sniff the fumes of gasoline,<br\/>But cooling breezes all the day<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Assist me to remain serene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I may not sit upon a fence<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While watching busy harvest hands;<br\/>Each morning early I commence<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The work necessity demands.<br\/>But while I strive with all my might<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To do my part as best I can,<br\/>I hear with undisturbed delight<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The hum of my electric fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Let others hurry far away<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In search of scenes that may be fair,<br\/>Or in the harvest fields all day<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Attempt to rid their souls of care.<br\/>My brow is kept from burning by<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Cool breezes wafted from a shelf\u2014<br\/>By soothing, friendly zephyrs I<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Can regulate to suit myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, June 13, 1914.
