By Henry Howland<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>She railed at the man who had wooed her, because<br\/>He was not such a man as another man was;<br\/>She scolded him over the teacups and when<br\/>The market went wrong she scolded again;<br\/>She complained when he smoked, it was sinful, she said;<br\/>She complained when he took up his paper and read;<br\/>Each day she complained that his love had grown cold<br\/>And she sighed to be loved as he loved her of old;<br\/>She envied her neighbor and murmured, \u201cAh, me!<br\/>Her husband still loves her! How happy I\u2019d be<br\/>To be loved as she is, to be cherished\u2014alas!<br\/>How our idols are broken, how soon the dreams pass!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Her neighbor, so blessed and so cherished, had praise<br\/>For him that so loved her; in many glad ways<br\/>She showed that she thought him exalted and wise;<br\/>She flattered him fondly; she watched with glad eyes<br\/>To see him approaching, to greet him at night;<br\/>She brought his cigar and she gave him a light;<br\/>When he made a mistake, as the wisest may do,<br\/>It was never his fault, that she told him she knew.<br\/>She was satisfied just as he was; she would not<br\/>Have him changed by the very least tittle or jot.<br\/>And through days that were fair and through days that were gray<br\/>She loved and was loved and went singing away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>There is nothing more sure, more absolute than<br\/>That no woman can scold love into a man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, June 20, 1914.
