By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>How softly fall the memory lights<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On pictures of the past<br\/>As still and sultry grow the nights<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That shade the glare at last.<br\/>When like a furnace breath so hot<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The breezes ebb and flow,<br\/>You think about the cherished spot<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where once you shoveled snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The eager tingle of the blast<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No more seems harsh and rude.<br\/>That sky with clouds all overcast<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Seems gentle and subdued.<br\/>Oh, how we wailed the bitter lot<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That faced us months ago,<br\/>And now how lovely seems the spot<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where once we shoveled snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, June 21, 1914.
