By Henry Howland.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The preacher looks out over empty pews,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The scholar sits unnoticed and alone;<br\/>The poet, collarless and needing shoes,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sings soulfully, unheeded and unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The actor who was born to grace the stage<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Reads splendidly the lines penned by the bard,<br\/>But no one notices his noble rage,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He is a creature robbed of all regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The artist who has striven well and long<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Walks through the empty gallery and sighs;<br\/>His canvases attract no eager throng,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And hunger dulls the luster of his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The halls of art are desolate and drear,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The sacred lamp of learning feebly glows;<br\/>Round roped arenas people wildly cheer,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Or overcrowd the moving picture shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, June 29, 1914.
