By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A collar built to suffocate;<br\/>A hat that seems a leaden weight;<br\/>A shirt and over that a coat<br\/>To shed each cool wave set afloat;<br\/>Suspenders which are far from light,<br\/>Or else a belt pulled safe and tight\u2014<br\/>In these suffering man so neat<br\/>Goes forth to battle with the heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A filmy cloud of rustling lace,<br\/>That floats along with clinging grace;<br\/>A bit of color, which the breeze<br\/>May toss about with buoyant ease\u2014<br\/>The man stands by and gasps for air<br\/>And then exclaims while gazing there<br\/>On comfortable loveliness,<br\/>\u201cHow foolishly those women dress!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, July 1, 1914.
