By Henry Howland.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>How dear to my heart is the old cider barrel,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As fond recollection presents it to view;<br\/>The place where they kept it corked up in the cellar<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Is as fresh in my mind as it ever was, too.<br\/>The damp, whitewashed walls, the potatoes and turnips,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The apples we\u2019d picked when the weather was fair\u2014<br\/>How well I recall them, how gladly I lingered<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Beside the old barrel deposited there\u2014<br\/>The old cider barrel, the hard cider barrel,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The iron-hooped barrel confronting me there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Once armed with a gimlet, I went to the barrel\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dear father and mother had gone for the day;<br\/>I bored a small hole and slipped a straw through it,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And ceased to be troubled while sucking away.<br\/>I found it the source of an exquisite pleasure,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Till things in my fancy seemed softly to blend,<br\/>And I couldn\u2019t have told whether I or the barrel<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Was dancing around or still standing on end\u2014<br\/>The old cider barrel, the hard cider barrel,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The iron-hooped barrel that stood upon end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Somehow I got out of the old whitewashed cellar<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And whooped and hurrahed and made merry awhile;<br\/>They say that my shouting aroused all the neighbors<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who lived in a circle of less than a mile.<br\/>At last my fond parents came home from their visit,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The things that ensued I shall never forget;<br\/>I acquired a hatred of hard cider barrels<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That long has been rankling and clings to me yet\u2014<br\/>If all the hard cider were spilled in the sewers<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019d look on the waste and be free from regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, July 2, 1914.
