{"id":8350,"date":"2022-07-08T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8350"},"modified":"2022-07-08T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T05:00:00","slug":"the-fire-alarm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-fire-alarm\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fire Alarm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn91064011\/1914-07-08\/ed-1\/seq-8\/\">Newark Evening Star, July 8, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When riding on their motor trucks<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I see the firemen pass,<br\/>Like soldiers dressed in uniforms<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of natty blue and brass,<br\/>I think about the volunteers<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who used, in other days,<br\/>To rally to the fire-alarm<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And battle with the blaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When clanged upon the midnight air<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That sudden summons loud,<br\/>The people tumbled out of bed,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A wild, excited crowd.<br\/>The barking dogs ran on ahead,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And shouts and cries arose<br\/>Above the crackle of the flames,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The hissing of the hose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>To save a neighbor\u2019s little home<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The axe and hose they plied,<br\/>Until among the cinders black<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The lurid demon died.<br\/>The old red shirts they used to sport<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are full of moths and holes;<br\/>The men who wore them, too, are dead\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;God rest their gallant souls!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But still we fear the smoky scourge,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And tremble with affright,<br\/>When suddenly the fire-alarm<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Blares out upon the night.<br\/>So here\u2019s a tribute from the heart,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A word of praise for all<br\/>The heroes of the hose and truck<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who answer to its call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Newark Evening Star, July 8, 1914.
