By Henry Howland.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They give the devil hoofs and horns<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who picture him with brush or pen,<br\/>So that whoever fears or scorns<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The dread arch enemy of men<br\/>May know him for a fiend, may know<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The cunning that is in his glances,<br\/>And, therefore, meet him as a foe<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;However slyly he advances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>They err who have him thus portrayed<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So that all men may know him well;<br\/>He comes without a hoof displayed<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Or anything that smacks of hell;<br\/>He comes fair-fronted, with a smile<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That quickly rids us of suspicion<br\/>And makes us think him splendid while<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He guides us downward to perdition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, July 9, 1914.
