{"id":8360,"date":"2022-07-15T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-15T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8360"},"modified":"2022-07-15T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-07-15T05:00:00","slug":"the-two-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-two-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"The Two Leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn89074404\/1914-07-15\/ed-1\/seq-5\/\">Grand Forks Daily Herald, July 15, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When Luck and Pluck, one summer day,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When faring forth together,<br\/>Pluck wore a suit of homespun gray,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Luck had a cap and feather;<br\/>A handsome, dashing fellow he,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And full of careless pleasure\u2014<br\/>\u201cCome follow me; I hold the key,\u201d<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He cried, \u201cof boundless treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He looked so gay, and bold, and strong,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That listening ears were plenty,<br\/>His train of followers grew long,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A dozen\u2014fifteen\u2014twenty\u2014<br\/>A hundred\u2014still they came; while Pluck<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Tramped on, with few behind him,<br\/>\u201cPoor plodding fools,\u201d cried laughing Luck,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cA stupid guide you\u2019ll find him!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Luck led his careless troop ahead<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With boasting and with revel.<br\/>The sun shown radiant overhead,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The road was smooth and level.<br\/>But as the day wore on, behold!<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Athwart the way, a river<br\/>Without a bridge, flowed deep and cold,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A sight to make one shiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell, well,\u201d cried Luck, \u201cWe\u2019ll sit and wait,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It may run dry tomorrow,<br\/>Or we\u2019ll see coming soon or late<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Some boat that we can borrow!\u201d<br\/>So down they sat\u2014and there they stayed<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To wait and hope at leisure,<br\/>While Luck assured them, undismayed,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They still would reach the treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But Pluck, with those who tramped behind<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His sturdy figure waited<br\/>No moment on the bank, to find<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Whether the stream abated;<br\/>They plunged, they swam, they fought their way,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The shore in safety gaining\u2014<br\/>And theirs the treasure is today<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While Luck goes on complaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, July 15, 1914.
