Greene.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A gray expanse of weathered wall<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I view from my lone window seat,<br\/>Whose other windows, one and all,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So empty, lifeless and effete,<br\/>Above a yard burnt up with heat,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Fill me with fancies saturnine\u2014<br\/>When something makes my gloom retreat\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;White lingerie upon a line!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Light, laughing laces flirt and fall,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And stockings, wind-filled to the feet,<br\/>Dance tangoes at an airy ball<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To music that the breezes beat.<br\/>Oh, swirling skirts so indiscreet,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You dance away black moods of mine!<br\/>Encore, oh hurricane, I entreat,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This lingerie upon a line!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, dance from dawn to even fall,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wind-woman, zephyr-souled and sweet!<br\/>What sarabands are at your call?<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where did you learn that ballet suite?<br\/>Yours is an art of the elite,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Oh, silken, swinging columbine,<br\/>Abstracted of all sex conceit\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Just lingerie upon a line!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But disillusion comes complete\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When something surely masculine<br\/>Is added to that silken cheat<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of lingerie upon a line!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Times Dispatch, July 19, 1914.
