By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Dear Editor:<br\/>I wish to call attention to the fact<br\/>That while in most respects your news is liberal an\u2019 exact,<br\/>There\u2019s something you are missin\u2019. I am wonderin\u2019 how you could<br\/>Be so indifferent to our influential neighborhood!<br\/>You write about the contests on the turf or in the ring,<br\/>But, up to now, your sportin\u2019 page has never said a thing<br\/>About the mighty battle where two giants was arrayed;<br\/>I mean the game of checkers me an\u2019 Ezry Slocum played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u2019Twas him as sent the challenge. Leastways, he was heard to say<br\/>That he could beat Si Perkins playin\u2019 checkers any day.<br\/>My last name bein\u2019 Perkins an\u2019 my fust name bein\u2019 Si,<br\/>Of course, I couldn\u2019t pass the base insinuation by.<br\/>Although our feelin\u2019s was intense, our speech was never rude.<br\/>We calmly met the gaze of the assembled multitude<br\/>That stood on barrels an\u2019 on crates an\u2019 even on the shelves<br\/>To see how me an\u2019 Ezry Slocum would acquit ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I made a swift attack an\u2019 jumped him all along the line.<br\/>I romped around his king row purty much like it was mine.<br\/>Oh, you talk about your polo or your golf or your base ball!<br\/>I want to say the game that we put up \u2018ud beat \u2018em all!<br\/>I am writin\u2019 to remind you that in this enlightened age<br\/>The public will take notice, if your valued sportin\u2019 page<br\/>Neglects to mention who has riz up to fame so high\u2014<br\/>The Checker Cyclone; which the same is<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Yours sincerely,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Si.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, July 26, 1914.
