By Henry Howland.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>If I possessed an income, say,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of thirty thousand dollars yearly<br\/>And had it fixed in such a way<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That I could see it coming clearly;<br\/>If, whether I should work or not,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The money kept on rolling to me,<br\/>I do not think a dismal thought<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Would ever stubbornly pursue me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>If such an income could be mine<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And I were young as well as wealthy,<br\/>If ladies thought my gifts divine,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And I were handsome, too, and healthy,<br\/>If men should always speak of me<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In terms that were most eulogistic,<br\/>I don\u2019t think I should ever be<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A fretful man or pessimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>If I had all the blessings which<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lie out beyond my reach at present;<br\/>If I were handsome, young and rich<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And my surroundings were all pleasant,<br\/>I might have freedom from regret;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The chances are, though, that I shouldn\u2019t,<br\/>For still, no doubt, I\u2019d long to get<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Some other something that I couldn\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, August 4, 1914.
