{"id":8402,"date":"2022-08-08T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-08T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8402"},"modified":"2022-08-08T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-08-08T05:00:00","slug":"the-long-hour-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-long-hour-men\/","title":{"rendered":"The Long-Hour Men"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038485\/1914-08-08\/ed-1\/seq-4\/\">The Birmingham Age Herald, August 8, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When close upon the sunset hour<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The welcome whistle blows,<br\/>The workman takes his dinner pail<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And homeward gaily goes.<br\/>He finds the table neatly spread,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And supper smoking hot,<br\/>And softly hums a little tune,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Contented with his lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He trots the baby on his knee,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And when the paper\u2019s read,<br\/>Knocks out the ashes from his pipe,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And early goes to bed.<br\/>His health is good, his heart is light,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His slumber sweet and sound\u2014<br\/>How different is it with the men<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who make the wheels go round!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The banker sits before his desk<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Till far into the night,<br\/>A thousand things demand his care<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And thread his locks with white.<br\/>The manufacturer is late<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When notes are falling due,<br\/>And threatened strikes and damage suits<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The merchant\u2019s path pursue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Eight hours, and then the toiler drops<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His yoke beside his tools,<br\/>Eight hours, and all the spindles rest,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The flaming furnace cools.<br\/>But still the business man, although<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His eyes for sleep are dim,<br\/>Must grind away, there is as yet<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No eight-hour law for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, August 8, 1914.
