{"id":8406,"date":"2022-08-12T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-12T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8406"},"modified":"2022-08-12T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-08-12T05:00:00","slug":"be-careful-what-you-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/be-careful-what-you-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Be Careful What You Say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn89074404\/1914-08-12\/ed-1\/seq-5\/\">Grand Forks Daily Herald, August 12, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>In speaking of a person\u2019s faults,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Pray don\u2019t forget your own;<br\/>Remember, those with home of glass<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Should seldom throw a stone.<br\/>If we had nothing else to do<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But talk of those who sin,<br\/>\u2019Tis better we commence at home<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And from that point begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We have no right to judge a man<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Until he\u2019s fairly tried;<br\/>Should we not like his company<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We know the world is wide.<br\/>Some may have faults\u2014and who has not?<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The old as well as young\u2014<br\/>Perhaps we may, for ought we know,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Have fifty to their one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll tell you of a better plan,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And find it works full well,<br\/>To try my own defects to cure,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Before of others tell.<br\/>And though I sometimes hope to be<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No more than some I know,<br\/>My own shortcomings bid me let<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The faults of others go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Then let us, when we commence<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To slander friend or foe,<br\/>Think of the harm one word would do<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To those we little know.<br\/>Remember, curses sometimes like<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Our chickens, \u2018roost at home\u2019:<br\/>Don\u2019t speak of others\u2019 faults until<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We have none of our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, August 12, 1914.
