By Robert Southey.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>It was a summer evening,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Old Kaspar&#8217;s work was done,<br\/>And he before his cottage door<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Was sitting in the sun,<br\/>And by him sported on the green<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His little grandchild Wilhelmine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>She saw her brother Peterkin<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Roll something large and round,<br\/>Which he beside the rivulet<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In playing there had found;<br\/>He came to ask what he had found,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That was so large, and smooth, and round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Old Kaspar took it from the boy,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who stood expectant by;<br\/>And then the old man shook his head,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And, with a natural sigh,\u2014<br\/>&#8220;&#8216;Tis some poor fellow&#8217;s skull,&#8221; said he,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Who fell in the great victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I find them in the garden,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For there&#8217;s many here about;<br\/>And often when I go to plough,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The ploughshare turns them out!<br\/>For many thousand men,&#8221; said he,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Were slain in that great victory.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Now tell us what &#8217;twas all about,&#8221;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Young Peterkin, he cries;<br\/>And little Wilhelmine looks up<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With wonder-waiting eyes;<br\/>&#8220;Now tell us all about the war,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And what they fought each other for.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was the English,&#8221; Kaspar cried,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Who put the French to rout;<br\/>But what they fought each other for,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I could not well make out;<br\/>But everybody said,&#8221; quoth he,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;That &#8217;twas a famous victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My father lived at Blenheim then,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Yon little stream hard by;<br\/>They burnt his dwelling to the ground,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And he was forced to fly;<br\/>So with his wife and child he fled,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nor had he where to rest his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With fire and sword the country round<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Was wasted far and wide,<br\/>And many a childing mother then,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And new-born baby died;<br\/>But things like that, you know, must be<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;At every famous victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They say it was a shocking sight<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;After the field was won;<br\/>For many thousand bodies here<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lay rotting in the sun;<br\/>But things like that, you know, must be<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;After a famous victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Great praise the Duke of Marlborough won,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And our good Prince Eugene.&#8221;<br\/>&#8220;Why, &#8217;twas a very wicked thing!&#8221;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Said little Wilhelmine.<br\/>&#8220;Nay, nay, my little girl,&#8221; quoth he,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;It was a famous victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And everybody praised the Duke<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who this great fight did win.&#8221;<br\/>&#8220;But what good came of it at last?&#8221;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Quoth little Peterkin.<br\/>&#8220;Why that I cannot tell,&#8221; said he,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;But &#8217;twas a famous victory.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, August 15, 1914.
