{"id":8414,"date":"2022-08-20T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-20T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8414"},"modified":"2022-08-20T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-08-20T05:00:00","slug":"the-boy-who-didnt-pass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-boy-who-didnt-pass\/","title":{"rendered":"The Boy Who Didn\u2019t Pass"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn89074404\/1914-08-20\/ed-1\/seq-3\/\">Grand Forks Daily Herald, August 20, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s getting cooler weather,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The summer is nearly done.<br\/>I\u2019ve had a lot of pleasure,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A great big heap of fun.<br\/>But school days soon are coming,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And nearly here, alas!<br\/>And I\u2019m that little lunk-head,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The boy who didn\u2019t pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I told my daddy about it,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He only shook his head.<br\/>I showed my card to mother.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s just a shame,\u201d she said.<br\/>But grandma cried, \u201cPoor laddie,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You\u2019ll hate to miss your class.\u201d<br\/>Then, teary-eyed, she kissed me,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The boy who didn\u2019t pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>September\u2019s like an ogre<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s coming pretty soon.<br\/>I didn\u2019t feel so dreadful<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Last summer when \u2019twas June.<br\/>But life has lost its roses,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There\u2019s only rue and grass<br\/>And prickly thistles waiting<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For the boy who didn\u2019t pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, August 20, 1914.
