By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI fear I\u2019m not a sportsman true,\u201d said Nimrod McIntyre.<br\/>\u201cSome things that sportsmen have to do I cannot quite admire.<br\/>Amid the joy with which we hail a triumph great or small,<br\/>I can\u2019t help feeling sorry for the creature that must fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI get the thrill which comes when in the water clear I look<br\/>And see the fish that battles to gain freedom from the hook.<br\/>And yet it\u2019s not the joy unqualified that I would wish,<br\/>For way down in my heart my sympathies are with the fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen, with my trusty gun in hand, to slay a bird I fail,<br\/>I don\u2019t feel blue at all. My sympathies are with the quail.<br\/>And yet I fish and shoot; but with no genuine desire<br\/>To kill a thing!
