By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>As imports grow uncertain, various epicures turn pale.<br\/>The truffle crop for us, they say, is almost sure to fail,<br\/>And persons of luxurious thirst in accents sad complain<br\/>That gout must be acquired without assistance from champagne.<br\/>The busy chef gets gloomy as he peels the pomme de terre<br\/>And spoils the consomme with tears of anger and despair<br\/>As we, the Kommonpeeple, gastronomic grief defy<br\/>And merrily meander \u2018mongst ham sandwiches and pie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Who cares though Wienerwurst may sell at fifty cents an inch<br\/>And caviare may bring two dollars and a half per pinch!<br\/>Although we\u2019ll miss the dainties from a distant foreign shore,<br\/>The good old lunchroom\u2019s handing out its blessings as of yore.<br\/>A restful refuge for the hoi polloi that has to work,<br\/>All free from apprehensions caused by Serbian or Turk.<br\/>Familiar luxuries are ours beneath a placid sky,<br\/>And it\u2019s easy to be happy with ham sandwiches and pie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, August 25, 1914.
