{"id":8440,"date":"2022-09-02T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-02T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8440"},"modified":"2022-09-02T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T05:00:00","slug":"when-he-is-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/when-he-is-wrong\/","title":{"rendered":"When He is Wrong"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038411\/1914-09-02\/ed-1\/seq-4\/\">Harrisburg Telegraph, September 2, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I am not a sage or seer,<br\/>There are many problems here<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That I couldn\u2019t solve correctly if I tried.<br\/>That I\u2019m not so very wise<br\/>Is a fact I recognize,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And it\u2019s something that I do not try to hide.<br\/>But in riding to and fro,<br\/>I have noticed as I go<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Men engaged in worldly conflicts loud and long,<br\/>And a dollar or a dime<br\/>I will wager every time,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The fellow with the loudest voice is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>On the trolly cars you\u2019ll find<br\/>Men of every sort and kind,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And they settle every problem that is known.<br\/>They will quickly put to rout<br\/>Every questionable doubt,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And they mock at every answer but their own.<br\/>I\u2019ll admit that I don\u2019t know<br\/>Half the things they say are so,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That I\u2019ve doubts on many questions that are strong;<br\/>But I\u2019m sure it\u2019s safe to bet,<br\/>If a wager you can get,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That the fellow with the loudest voice is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When a man begins to shout<br\/>And waves his arms about,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When he voices his opinion in a shriek;<br\/>When he works with lungs and jaw<br\/>And he tries to overawe<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His brothers who are mild and sane and meek,<br\/>When he tries to advertise<br\/>To the world that he is wise,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And he seeks to get the notice of the throng<br\/>By the volume of his chatter;<br\/>What the subject doesn\u2019t matter,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It is always safe to wager that he\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Harrisburg Telegraph, September 2, 1914.
