By Madison Cawein.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, I went down the old creek, the cold creek, the creek of other days,<br\/>And on the way I met a ghost, pale in the moonlight\u2019s rays,<br\/>The ghost of one, a little boy, with whom my heart still plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He looked at me, he nodded me, he beckoned with his pole,<br\/>To follow where we oft had gone to that old fishing hole,<br\/>In checker of the shine and shade beneath the old beech pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The old hole, the dark hole, wherein we marked the gleam<br\/>Of minnows streaking, silvery rose, and in its deep a dream<br\/>Of something gone forever down the glimmer of the stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The old hole, the deep hole, o\u2019er which we watched the flash<br\/>Of bronze and brass of dragonflies and listened for the splash<br\/>Of frogs that leaped from lilied banks when round them we would dash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He stood beside me there again, with fishing pole and line,<br\/>And looked into my eyes and said, \u201cThe fishing will be fine!\u201d<br\/>And bade me follow down the stream and placed his hand in mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But it was strange! I could not speak, however I might try,<br\/>While all my heart choked up with tears, and I could only sigh<br\/>And whisper to myself, \u201cAh, God, if I could only die!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He laughed at me, he beckoned me, but I\u2014I stood wide eyed;<br\/>A spell was on my soul, I knew, that kept me from his side,<br\/>A spell that held me back from him, my boyhood that had died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u2019Twas there beside the old creek, the cold creek, the creek of long gone by,<br\/>I stood upon its banks awhile when stars were in the sky,<br\/>And oh, I met and talked with him, the child that once was I!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, September 5, 1914.
