By Henry Howland.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When things have all gone wrong, when they<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Whom you have deemed your friends have turned,<br\/>Because ill luck has come your way,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And sought their pleasures, unconcerned;<br\/>When all your plans have gone amiss<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And all your hopes have taken flight,<br\/>Then you have need of her fond kiss<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who waits to welcome you, at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When Fate has been inclined to cheat<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You of rewards you hoped to claim,<br\/>When, with the bruises of defeat,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And bending under bitter blame,<br\/>You turn, at night, to them who still<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are faithful, patient, loving, just,<br\/>You need the little one to fill<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Your heart with hope, your soul with trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When all goes well, when Fortune beams<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon you with her fairest smile;<br\/>When Luck befriends you and it seems<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That effort still is well worth while,<br\/>When smiling flatterers proceed<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To put your lingering doubts to flight,<br\/>You may forget that you have need<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of them who wait for you at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The sky that is today so blue<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;May cease tomorrow to be clear;<br\/>The friends who now appear so true<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;May shun you when you need their cheer;<br\/>But they who nightly give you kind<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Glad greetings, faithfully will wait;<br\/>Be true to them, for you will find<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That they are needed, soon or late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Rock Island Argus, September 7, 1914.
