{"id":8447,"date":"2022-09-08T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8447"},"modified":"2022-09-08T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-08T05:00:00","slug":"profitless-pity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/profitless-pity\/","title":{"rendered":"Profitless Pity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038615\/1914-09-08\/ed-1\/seq-6\/\">The Times Dispatch, September 8, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We sigh for the man who might have been great<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If he only had tried in a sensible way;<br\/>We witness his fall and we pity his fate,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We blame the foul chances that sent him astray;<br\/>We think of the wonders he never has done,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We dismally speak of the talent he had,<br\/>And grievously, solemnly thinking him one<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Whom fortune has cheated, we murmur, \u201cToo bad!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We never waste sighs on the poor little man<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Who strives without talent, obscure and unschooled,<br\/>Who daily is doing the best that he can<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;By worthiness urged and by decency ruled;<br\/>We never have pity for him as we pass<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where, lacking fair gifts, he is trying to rise;<br\/>His case never moves us to murmur, \u201cAlas!\u201d<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No matter how bravely he manfully tries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Ah well, perhaps heaven, when heaven is gained,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Will furnish the gifts the unnoticed ones lack,<br\/>And there the ambitious who have not complained<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;May win all their hopes and their eagerness back;<br\/>But never in heaven, if heaven is fair,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;May the talented ones who have fallen in shame<br\/>Partake of the glory the worthy may share<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Or find any joy in the city they claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Times Dispatch, September 8, 1914.
