{"id":8453,"date":"2022-09-14T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-14T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=8453"},"modified":"2022-09-14T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-14T05:00:00","slug":"school-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/school-days\/","title":{"rendered":"School Days"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn89074405\/1914-09-14\/ed-1\/seq-3\/\">Grand Forks Daily Herald, September 14, 1914<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s lonesome in the stable yard and where the chickens \u201cpeep.\u201d<br\/>It\u2019s dull and stupid, \u2018round the house, the kitten\u2019s fast asleep;<br\/>Old Towser, nosin\u2019 everywhere and huntin\u2019 \u2018round the place,<br\/>Comes back to whine and paw my knee and look up in my face;<br\/>And mother, in the kitchen there, amongst the pans and things,<br\/>Is busy, but I haven\u2019t heard the song she always sings;<br\/>There\u2019s somethin\u2019 missin\u2019, somethin\u2019 wrong that spoils the work and play\u2014<br\/>And don\u2019t I know it? Well, I guess, he\u2019s gone to school today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I try to work and not to think, but trying all I can,<br\/>I stop and wonder why it\u2019s still\u2014no drummin\u2019 on a pan,<br\/>No rustlin\u2019 in the apple trees, no splashin\u2019 by the pump,<br\/>And no one hid behind the post to \u201cBoo\u201d and make me jump,<br\/>And in the house it\u2019s all so prim\u2014no tickin\u2019 of the clock.<br\/>I look at ma and she at me; no need for us to say<br\/>What ails us both; we know too well\u2014he\u2019s gone to school today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He started out at half-past eight, all rigged up in his best,<br\/>And with the slate beneath his arm, the books and all the rest;<br\/>And mother fixed his tie once more, and did her best to smile.<br\/>And I stood by and praised him up and laughed about his \u201cstyle.\u201d<br\/>But when he marched off down the road and stopped to wave goodbye,<br\/>\u2019Twas kind of choky in my throat and misty in my eye.<br\/>Proud of him? Well, I rather guess, and happy too\u2014but, say,<br\/>It\u2019s mighty lonesome round the place. He\u2019s gone to school today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But \u2018tisn\u2019t just the lonesomeness that ails us, don\u2019t you know?<br\/>It isn\u2019t jest because he\u2019s gone till four o\u2019clock or so;<br\/>It\u2019s like the little worsted socks that\u2019s in the bureau there;<br\/>It\u2019s like the little dresses, too, that once he used to wear;<br\/>The thought that something\u2019s past and gone, outgrown and put away\u2014<br\/>That brings to mother\u2019s heart and mine the bittersweet today.<br\/>It\u2019s jest another forward step, in Time\u2019s unchanging rule\u2014<br\/>Our baby\u2019s left us now for good; our boy has gone to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Grand Forks Daily Herald, September 14, 1914.
